A Narnian confession

Let me just get this out of the way right now: I have never read The Chronicles of Narnia

Okay, that isn't exactly true. In fifth grade I read THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. I wound up being so traumatized by the scene with Aslan and the White Witch at the stone table that I refused to read any more in the series. And I haven't. Until now!

I had to write a critical paper on a book called THE CORRECTIONS for a class last month, and in this book, there are a TON of references to C. S. Lewis and Narnia (a prescription drug called Aslan, a young character reading the books). I decided to write my paper on Narnia's influence in the book. One problem: I haven't read the series.

As any reader would do in a time of crisis, I drove to Barnes and Noble and picked up this bad boy:

That's right! All seven books in one! Isn't the cover beautiful?

I skimmed the scenes I needed for my paper (I had enough general knowledge of the series to know which pieces to include in my essay) and then went back to the beginning of the series. My paper has been handed in, and now I can relax and work my way through all seven books!

Since then, I've finished THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW, the first book in the series. I'll post my review tomorrow, but spoiler alert: I LOVED IT! I'm having a ton of fun with this series already, and it makes me feel like a giddy little kid again.

Okay, let the shaming commence. How many of you are long-time Narnia fans? How many years ago should I have read this (I'm guessing about 15)? Or did any of you have Narnia-free childhoods like me?

  1. I LOVE Narnia, but I had a Narnia-free childhood too. I read the books after the first movie came out. And, no surprise there, totally fell in love with them.
My childhood, however, was mostly dominated by Harry Potter and the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys books. And, Enid Blyton. I read everything by Enid Blyton and that was no mean feat cos she wrote an enormous amount.

    1. I agree! I was a Harry Potter kid and didn't read much of anything else for a few years. Then I jumped right into YA fiction and sort of accidentally skipped a bunch of other middle grade series. It's been fun becoming a kid again and reading Narnia!
