What's Up Wednesday: Slacker (aka. preparing to move across the state) Edition

Happy Wednesday everyone! Link up at Jaime's blog.

What I’m Reading
I finished the second book in Chris Colfer’s THE LAND OF STORIES series, THE ENCHANTRESS RETURNS. I’m working on a review, but let me just say, such a fun read! I love fairy tales with a twist. I haven’t read much of my other two in-progress books, ANNA KARENINA and THE PARTICULAR SADNESS OF LEMON CAKE, but I’m still loving them, I promise!

What I’m Writing
Well…not much. My trip to Pittsburgh for job training set me back last week, and packing/visiting friends has set me back even further. I’m moving to Pittsburgh on Saturday and starting my new job Monday, so I’m going to keep my goal simple: Hit 35K. I only have about 500 words to go, and I’ll be happy if I write that much. I’m going to work writing time into my new-grown-up-grad-student schedule once I figure it out, but for now I’m taking things slow.

What Inspires Me Lately
I had a great time on my solo Pittsburgh trip, and I’m excited to start this new, more grown up phase of my life.

What Else Is New
Brother/sister movie date!
I visited two of my best college friends this week. It was great catching up with them, and even though that mostly consisted of sitting in the living room and watching a crazy amount of Disney movies (the same thing we did during school last year), it was perfect.

I also took my brother to see the new Percy Jackson movie. I’ve never read the books so I can’t judge accuracy, but I enjoyed it. I mean, Nathan Fillion as Hermes? In those short UPS shorts (shortly followed by a quick change into a Richard Castle-esque suit)? That five-minute scene was totally worth my money for the movie ticket!

I’m moving to Pittsburgh on Saturday and would appreciate any positive thoughts/faith in my ability to lift heavy boxes you can send my way! My books are in rolling suitcases, thankfully, or I’m not sure they’d make it up the stairs!

Happy Wednesday!

  1. Ah, Nathan Fillion. Love him! I haven't read the books either, but I enjoyed the first movie. I'll have to see the second one too and make sure I read the books! (Also, it's pretty cool that you and your little bro went on a movie date. :D) I hear you on having a slow (or non-existent) writing week. Sometimes life just needs to take centre stage for a bit. Glad you had so much fun on your solo trip and with your college buddies! :-)

    1. Nathan Fillion is the best! :) And my brother and I get along much better than we used to now that I'm away at college.

It's okay, we'll both get back on track with writing soon. Life just needs to calm down a little! Good luck with your goals for the week, Jaime!

  2. Best of luck with your move, Kaitlin! I haven't read the PERCY JACKSON books either, but I am intrigued by the movie. I have a feeling my girlie would like it. Perhaps we should give the books a read before going... I'm glad to hear that you had a good trip. Catching up with friends is the best. :-)

    1. Thanks Katy! I'm thinking about reading the books eventually...I'm going through a phase where I want to read/reread middle-grade books. Reliving my childhood! ;)

  3. Good luck with moving, and have fun in Pittsburgh! It's my native city, and I've often thought of moving back as an adult. There are so many awesome things to see and do there, and I love how working-class and ethnically diverse it is.

    1. Thanks so much! I'm excited to explore the city...it sounds like there's SO MUCH to do. It's a little overwhelming, but mostly exciting. :)

  4. I really want to read The Land of Stories, but I never had the chance. Soon.
I read the Percy Jackson books, but I haven't seen the second movie yet. I heard it follows the book much better than the first movie.

    1. I highly recommend The Land of Stories, especially if you love fairy tales. It's a pretty quick and easy read, but I'm entertained the entire time and don't feel like I'm reading a "kid's book" at all.

    1. My whole family is helping me move, thank goodness. My dad is driving most of my stuff out in his truch...I wouldn't be able to fit anything in my little car!

  6. Good luck with moving, and with your new grown-up life! You're way ahead of me in the moving-along-in-the-real-world race. I think 500 words for the week is a great goal, especially with everything you're doing. You'll get back into the swing of things in no time, I bet :)

    1. Thanks Rebecca! I'm excited to get out there and set up my new routine. I really need to set aside the same time every day for writing. I think it'll help my word count a lot!

  7. I can't believe it's time for you to move already ... I swear, you were JUST telling me about the original job interview! Where in the world has the time gone? Enjoy the next few days at home, and good luck this weekend! :)

  8. I haven't read the Percy Jackson series of books either. So I can't really judge the movies based on the books too. But I find them entertaining. Good luck with moving! Good luck with your writing goals! Have a great weekend!

  9. I love the Percy Jackson books, but hated the first movie. A lot of people have said the second movie is better, so maybe I should watch it after all. Good luck in Pittsburg.

    1. The books are on my to-read list! I've talked to a lot of people who really like them. I normally like to read a book before I see its movie but didn't get a chance this time.
